Propane Explosion Scatters Asbestos

An explosion at the Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases site in Toronto has threatened to expose thousands of residents to airborne asbestos. The individuals live in about 100 homes that border the factory's former location.

According to an article in the Edmonton Sun, police had to cordon off the homes and they are considered off-limits to owners until a clean-up plan can be devised and asbestos materials can be removed.

Six people were sent to the hospital, another 18 admitted themselves to a local hospital, and some 40 people were treated at the scene after the explosion occurred at about 4 am on Sunday morning. No one was killed by the explosion but a firefighter died later on Sunday. An employee at the facility remains unaccounted for as of Tuesday.

The explosion displaced thousands of area residents, the article reports. Some remained in shelters while others are living with friends and family members.

"There's a lot of damage down there," said Glen Sears, who lives about 100 meters from the site which, according to the article, houses scores of propane containers - including tanker-sized ones.

"There was ... pieces of propane tanks coming down out of the sky," he said. "There was a lot of stuff flying out of the sky on fire."

"I'm disappointed with the government that they would allow anything like a propane company to be situated where it is in the middle of a heavy residential area," added resident Dave Wisdom.
